In Chapter 6 “Death of Social Schizophrenia”
Eric Qualman offers several examples of how behavior presented on social media
has affected the lives of those involved. Athletes forced off teams because of their
comments on facebook, teachers fired over the persona they present in a game. Before social media, those that witnessed your
behavior only knew the crazy things you might have done after work, now social
media combined with smart phones equipped with cameras and video options force
many not so positive behaviors into the public eye, including your coworkers
and boss. The big question out there is should your behavior once off the clock
affect your job status?
I do not think there is only one
correct answer to this question. I don’t think it is fair that your personal
opinion is held against you, you do have freedom of speech and the right to
your own opinion, however if you slam your employer on social media are you
really putting a positive foot forward in your job, if not there is certainly
someone out there that will. If you go on a drunken rage and land yourself a
night or two in jail, should you face the possibility of being fired because of
that behavior? Everyone has their own opinions on how your behavior after work
should, if at all, affect your work persona. Personally, I believe that if you
show up at work daily, on time and you’re a productive employee your behavior
outside of the workplace should have no bearing on your status as an employee.
