I found the section in Chapter 7 called: "John Deere Mows Over Facebook" very entertaining. To me, the amount of information you can find on Facebook is overwhelming. There are multiple groups for any sort of subject you look for. It is incredible what you are able to find. Using Facebook to advertise your product or brand is probably one of the smartest things you can do. Facebook sells everything, ever when the creator of the brand or product is not trying. This section explains this very thoroughly. Well, at least, I believe it does.
When you, as the owner of the product, uses social media, you will never have to worry about how your items will be promoted or sold. Your customers or clients will take care of that for you. Does that scare you? It sure scares the you know what out of me! I want to be in charge of my products. I want to be in charge of promoting and advertising. Unfortunately it is getting harder and harder to do. Even if your company has it's own Facebook page, it does not necessarily mean you will have much control.
You also have to be on the look out for your competition and negative promoters. They can do real damage to your reputation. Even with a lot of positive feedback, one negative comment can destroy your reputation and the reputation of your product. Social media is not safe. You never have complete control over your brand. It is scary how much social media controls our lives.
Social media forces companies to produce quality products. If companies do not perform and make a subpar product, consumers will spread the word. I agree that a negative review can snowball and give a brand a bad reputation.
