You could say I am late
bloomer. I didn't get married until 30,
had my second child at 40, and now at 42 years of age, I am in college. To say I am new to social media is an understatement,
which is what prompted me to take this class in the first place. Now I am fascinated! I had no idea that social media was playing
such a huge role in my life. It just had
never occurred to me. I feel like
Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, once you peek behind the curtain, there is no
going back.
My last blog was entitled
“Meet Them Where They Are”, could be used for this blog entry as well. I can’t help but think that the large turnout
in the 2008 election was due in part to social media. “Close to 65% of the American population
voted in the 2008 election, the highest turnout since the election of
1908.”
Social media did
several things in the latest election that appealed to voters. First it
offers two way communication allowing voters to feel like they have a voice in
the election. Second, it creates
transparency that while a foreign concept to government is a very well known
one to the social media user. After all,
what happens in Vegas stays on facebook, You tube, and twitter forever. Third, it delivered the message in a voice
they could understand and relate to.
The 2012 election will
no doubt be a hot topic trending on social media, and now that I am a more
“plugged in” voter, you can bet that I will be there too.
