Quality over quantity

In the article Social media? Get serious! Understanding the functional building blocks of social media one of the blocks discussed is reputation. At first I thought they were going to begin to discuss how what you put on social media can effect how others view you. However, it was more about reputation based on your number of friends on Facebook, followers on Twitter or Instagram, etc. It also discussed how it is more than just this number; it also depends on the quality of the posts being made. I found this interesting because you could gain a large quantity of friends or followers on social media but if you do not keep up the quality of the content that attracted them in the first place, you could lose them just as easily as you gained them. In a business sense this is important to understand and use to help keep the attention of friends and followers. A business does not want to gain a bunch of friends or followers as a fad by using one big promotional event or item. They must keep up this reputation by constantly promoting new items and ideas. It all comes down to whether or not their friends and followers remain consistent reliable consumers. It is all up to the business and the content they use to keep it that way.

This year will be my roommates second year as the campus rep for the Victoria’s Secret PINK campus program, and my second year as one of her street team members. We use social media to help promote the brand and upcoming events. Over the past year we have gained a great deal of likes on Facebook and followers on Twitter and Instagram. Yet it is our job to keep the old and new friends and followers interested in our pages and involved in our events and giveaways. We have to come up with new fun ideas to give away the freebies instead of just simply giving them away. In the past we have used social media where girls were asked to post a picture in their best PINK attire and the winner would win whatever giveaway we had at the time. We also had a scavenger hunt and posted hints on social media. The more fun ideas and events we posted on social media the more friends and followers we had, but also a bigger turnout at events. Goes to show how important holding up your reputation in the functional building blocks of social media is.
