Vanity Search...Do I really Want That Out There?

I had never thought about "vanity searching" my own name throughout the Internet.  While I am not a celebrity or some notable figure, I tried to find myself.  I was able to locate several Michael Kingston's on the Internet.  They were on various social media sites, Linked In, Facebook, and Google+.  I was able to actually locate myself, it was my Google+ account.  It showed some pictures of my son that I had posted a year ago.  Which brings me to a couple of points.  First, I need to change my account settings so that my pictures are not out there for everyone to see.  Two, even someone as average as me, can be located on the Internet due to Social Media.  Is that a footprint I want to leave out there?  While most peoples response to that question is, "I have nothing to hide" I find that a quick answer without much thought behind it.  You know those exes you have in your past?  Do you really want them to know where you are going for dinner, or who you are dating now.  What about your employer?  If your friend posts a picture of a party you went to and tags you in it... now your employer knows something that you didn't even post on your profile.  So while vanity searches are often for the rich and or famous...  You might give yourself a search and see what the rest of the world can see about you with just your name.
