Stop stressing, start living!

I don’t know about you guys, but I know personally there hasn’t been one day in a long time that at some point I didn’t think to myself “there just isn’t enough time in the day to accomplish everything I wanted to”. Most days I feel like I am wasting my time if I take a half hour to relax and watch TV instead of doing the dishes piled up in the sink or work on my paper that is due in a few days. It seems like no matter how much work and cleaning I accomplish there is always something else that could be done! At times it can be extremely overwhelming, but lately I have been realizing that life is too short to always be worrying. In order to truly enjoy life you need to take time away from school, work, and extracurricular activities and spend time doing something that you love and relieves stress. I began to notice that my schedule was starting to become a problem when a friend would ask me for a favor like driving them to class or a doctors appointment and it would annoy me because it would throw off my entire schedule. I would literally plan my day down to the last second, but I realized that is not physically possible because life happens. Sometimes there will be traffic, your computer will crash, a friend will need your help and that is completely ok.

The article I read on Mashable was called, 3 Beliefs That Transformed My Work-Life Balance. As I was reading the article I found that I could relate to many of the points the author Erin Greenawald was making. The one that I could relate to the most was when she talked about agreeing to go somewhere with a friend on a Thursday and regretting it immediately after. The reason why she regrets it is because her schedule is so hectic and that was the only “me” time she had to do whatever she wanted. It made me begin to realize that I needed to start including time to relax and read a book or go on a hike instead of always piling up my schedule with work and chores. Overall life is too short to always be stressing, it is the little things in life that need to be appreciated more. I have decided that if a friend needs me or there is a play going on that I really wanted to see I am going to do that instead of doing the laundry, it will always be there to fit in another day.

Overall if anyone is feeling stressed about a crazy lifestyle, which I am almost positive everyone has felt this way at some point this article gives some great tips. Erin Greenawald’s main three points of the article were “Free time doesn’t need to be available time, If it’s not on the calendar it won’t happen, and sometimes my time is more valuable than my money” (par 1-3). What she means by that is that just because you have “free time” that does not mean if someone asks you to go to a charity dinner you are obligated to say yes. You can easily say no just because you want to use that time to unwind and watch your favorite TV show, time to relax is necessary! She also explains how you should make specific time in your schedule to exercise, plan a vacation, or go to coffee with a friend if that’s something you have been wanting to do. Also, she says you should sit down and see what is taking up your time that you feel is unnecessary that someone else could easily do. For example, doing the yard work or cleaning the house, if you are financially able to hire someone to do these task she encourages you do. Then you can use that time to be less stressed and enjoy life! The message I got from the article is achieve your goals in life but take time to sit back relax and just breathe!
