Apps are Changing the World...

I read the article ‘10 Must-Have Apps for Dog Owners’ from mashable.com. (http://mashable.com/2013/03/14/apps-for-dogs/#gallery/10-must-have-apps-for-dog-owners/520c1bc63182972ba3000206) It caught my interest for two reasons; first I am interested in the proliferation of useful apps that exist, and second I am a dog owner.

Dallas & Kasey

I thought it would be a list of ten apps, all with the same useless features. However, the list surprised me with how different the apps were, and how potentially useful many of them seemed to be. A few of the apps were a bit frivolous, like Weather Puppy, which shows your local weather accompanied by a cute puppy picture suited to the conditions outside. I admit, that isn’t going to help much.

However, many of the apps were quite appealing because of their usefulness. MapMyDogWalk uses the GPS on your smartphone to track the length and duration of you and your dog’s walk. Another very useful app was DoggyDatez which allows dog owners to find other dog owners near their home or exercise spot. There were also useful apps for keeping track of veterinary care, as well as first aid information and full-time GPS tracking via collar.

App development is truly changing the world. Marketers use to ‘refer to the smartphone as the Third Screen, after televisions and PC’s.’ (Mobile app growth exploding, and shows no signs of letting up, Dylan Tweney, venturebeat.com, downloaded 9/28/13 from http://venturebeat.com/2013/07/10/state-of-the-apposphere/) Now many believe that ‘Mobile is the first screen. The table is the second screen.’ (Mobile app growth exploding, and shows no signs of letting up, Dylan Tweney, venturebeat.com, downloaded 9/28/13 from http://venturebeat.com/2013/07/10/state-of-the-apposphere/) Business are even finding that they need to adapt their websites to the mobil experience, as less and less people use actual PC’s to view web content. It’s estimated that in 2013 ‘mobile phones will overtake desktops as the most commonly used device to access the web.’ (Infographic: How Mobile is Changing Business, KISSMetrics Blog, download 9/28/13 from http://blog.kissmetrics.com/mobile-is-changing-business/)

If you have a smartphone but are not using apps yet to increase productivity, you should give them a try. They are, for now at least, the way of the future!

  1. I love all the apps for dog owners, I have three at my parents house and they are my babies so I will definitely have to check out some of those apps. I think that the vet tracker app would be very useful for owners of any pet just because I know it is hard to keep track of how often you go to the vet and what your pet needs shot wise.
