What most surprised me watching the video was, with all the other statistics, businesses only spend 1% on mobile. That fact, especially in light of the teen statistics, teen data consumption up 256% for example, demonstrates that businesses are, for whatever reasons, reticent to recognize this important trend in society.
So you have to ask yourself why might that be? Why would business not spend more on something that so many people are using? I think part of the answer lies in the fact that mobile use has a tremendous correlation to age. For those of us over say, 25, how many people do you know who send 3339 texts a month? There is an entire generation in development who use mobile in a way that most of us might find exhausting. And so it is difficult for organizations and businesses, run by people 22 and older, to relate to this entirely new mobile paradigm. I recently had an organization I consult with, run by a 50 year old, tell me that they didn’t think social media was important for their organization now or in the near future! It can be hard to relate to new and different things sometimes.
As the video points out however, business that do not keep their finger on the pulse of things will soon have no pulse at all. And this trend is such a paradigm shift, and happening so quickly, that business that do not get a grasp on it now will likely get lost trying to catch up in the end.
