Vacation can mean a lot of different things
for a lot of different people. Many like
to travel and visit new cities all based on ideas from internet search,
reading, cooking programs, and travel programs.
I have always noticed that a majority of these ideas while visiting are
great but seem to be focused on areas the average vacationer cannot
afford. Gas prices, hotel stays, and
food leave very little money to truly enjoy a family vacation. My top 10 list will assist you for a real
vacation to Savannah, Georgia based on seeing the true city at an affordable
price.
10. Bobo
Seafood Market – 2800 Montgomery Street
Do
not be put off by the area of this store or the smell, it is a seafood
market. For less than $20 you will be
able to feed a family of four a low country boil. For those that are not familiar with that
shrimp, crab, sausage, corn all boiled together. This is not a sit down restaurant so pick up
your food, take some napkins, pick up some drinks, and find the nearest park
bench and indulge at one of my favorite places.
9. Old Fort Jackson – 1 Fort
Jackson Road
One of the oldest Forts in the Southeast
used by the Confederacy to guard Savannah from attack from the sea. Great place to take pictures and check the calendar
for events. At a whopping $4 a person
you cannot miss this place
8. Downtown Ghost Tours –
Savannah is considered one of the most
haunted cities and there are plenty of tours that have capitalized on
this. Tickets range from $15-30 dollars
a person depending on the tour. This can
get expensive for a large family so an alternate idea is do some research
online and plan your on family haunted tour around the city. For the record it is haunted, I can
personally witnessed some strange things captured on pictures my family has
taken over the years.
7. Bonaventure
Cemetery –
It’s
free and it is creepy with graves dating back to the mid 1700’s. Enough said!!!!
6. City Market-
Has
the characteristics of the cities old open marketplace where you can see local
musicians and artist while you are drinking a cold beer. It is kid friendly with plenty of open air
seating at the restaurants so you can eat and enjoy the activities.
5. Savannah
Historic District-Savannah River, E.
Broad St., Gwinnett St., and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd
You don’t need go on
a tour or pay take the afternoon and explore the houses and churches on this
walk.
4. The Pirate House- 20 E. Broad Street
The only tourist and
costly area that I will plug on the top ten list. However, it is worth the fact that The Pirate
House has been open since 1753 and was a common hang out for pirates. As you walk in you will see the tunnel that
pirates used to escape authorities and get back on their ships. For those that read Treasure Island, this is
the place that that inspired Robert Lewis Stevenson.
27 miles from Savannah enjoy the day at the
beach, plenty of local eateries with a couple of fast food places or pack your
lunch. Parking will cost less than $10
for the day and the beaches are family friendly.
2. Wet Willies-101 E. River Street
Adult friendly drinks
at a very affordable price, what you brought your kids? That’s ok one of you slip in and bring the
drinks out, no open container laws in Savannah.
1.
River Street –
You have
been scared, filled your historic quota, fed yourself with fresh seafood, and
got a drink at Wet Willies. Now it is
time to explore River Street in downtown Savannah. It is easy to find because it runs along the
Savannah River. It’s a tourist place but
well worth the walk. Several candy
shops, bars, and local food establishments occupy the street. This is a great area to take the children,
but it does get pretty wild after midnight.

I LOVE Savannah! We enjoyed the River Walk as well and we loved Paula Deen's restaurant - I'm still a fan :)
ReplyDeleteHey you forgot to offer your spare room to make the vacation even cheaper. No seriously, the Pirate House intrigues me.
